I have a question for you: Think of somebody who is successful; it could be an artist, a politician, an athlete or a business owner, anybody you know that is successful. Now the question is: how did that person end up being successful? Was it because of hard work? Or did that person have a talent for it?

For most people, they believe that having talent, like singing, or cooking or even winning a gold medal in a particular sport, is enough to make anyone successful. But the truth is talent has little significance to do with it. Think about that for a moment.

Take singing for example. Imagine that there are many people with great singing voices and some of them decided to get into a music career. Out of all those people, only a few continued on to have a successful music career. Why is that the case?

Just because some of those people are naturally good at something, it doesn’t mean they have a better chance of being successful. In other words: talent is not enough. If that is the case, then how is it possible for some people to achieve success, despite of having talent or lack of it? The answer is hard work.

It doesn’t matter if the odds are not in your favor, or you’re deemed less likely to succeed, your chances of achieving success are measured on the time and effort you put in. And although it doesn’t come easily and naturally as talent would, it is a sure way of achieving your goal.

And nobody can explain this better than Richard St. John. He had interviewed over 500 people in 10 years, to find out how they are successful. In this TED ED video, he explains why hard work is a major factor that leads to one’s success and not other factors like smarts and talent. Check out the video.

Generally, most people who mention hard work as a means of ensuring success, are from people who are either successful, or those who recognize what it takes to achieve it. Even people like Alen Stien explain how important it is to work hard in basketball training. Check out his speech in this video, and notice how he never mentions talent.

In the end, as Tim Notke would say, “Hard Work Beats Talent, when Talent Doesn’t Work Hard.” So the next time you see your favorite celebrity or the next famous successful person, just remember, they made it there by doing one thing: Hard Work.
